Amanda’s diamond bracelet flashed under the chandeliers as she smiled at me from across the table.

Her wedding dress spilled around her chair in perfect folds, white satin and lace arranged like she had stepped out of a bridal magazine and into a courtroom where she had already declared me guilty.

“This restaurant is way above your budget,” she said.

She did not whisper it.

She did not lean close, soften her tone, or pretend she was worried about me.

She announced it loudly enough for the next table to hear.

“I honestly don’t know why you ordered like you belong here.”

Marcus, her brand-new husband, lifted his champagne glass to his mouth and smirked into it.

My father gave the small cough he used whenever he wanted the room to know he was disappointed in me but too refined to say it first.

My mother looked down at her plate with two fingers near her lips, doing that old performance of trying not to laugh.

The steak on my plate was tender.

The sauce was perfect.

The humiliation was clearly supposed to be the main course.

I set my knife down carefully.

“It came with the dinner,” I said.

Dad looked across the table at me like I had tracked mud through a church aisle.

“Stick to fast food, dear,” he said.

Then he smiled.

“That’s more your speed.”

The table went quiet for half a second.
