On the day of my sister’s wedding, my parents and my sister completely ignored me like I was an uninvited guest who had wandered in off the street instead of someone who shared their blood.

I said congratulations loud enough for Rebecca to hear me over the clink of champagne glasses, the whisper of satin, and the soft little conversations people stopped having when I came too close.

Thirty-seven people stood inside that reception barn pretending they had not already been told exactly what to think of me.

Rebecca stood under strings of Edison bulbs in a white dress that probably cost more than my car.

My mother held a mimosa so cold the glass had fogged beneath her fingers.

My father adjusted his cuff links and stared past my shoulder like the barn wall had become the most fascinating thing in Wisconsin.

Rebecca did not look at me.

Not once.

Not a nod.

Not a blink.

Not even the polite little smile strangers give each other when the elevator doors close and everybody is trapped together for ten seconds.

I smiled anyway.

That was what I had been trained to do.

Smile through panic.

Smile through insult.

Smile until everyone else could stay comfortable.

Then I found the video.

By the time the train doors slid shut behind me at 6:31 p.m., my phone had already rung twenty-seven times.

I did not check who it was.

I did not need to.

The buzzing inside my purse sounded like a trapped insect, frantic and offended that I had finally chosen silence.
