The first thing Natalie noticed was the smell of orange peel.

It was too sharp to be pretty.

A waiter in a white jacket had twisted citrus over champagne glasses at Willow Creek Country Club, and the oil hung in the air above the table like someone had polished the room for an audience.

Under it were buttered croissants, hot coffee, warm wood, and the faint smell of chlorine drifting from the pool beyond the glass wall.

Natalie sat at the end of the table with a glass of ice water between her hands and watched her sister Sarah become the center of the room.

Sarah did not simply sit there.

She performed.

Cream blazer.

Pearl earrings.

MBA smile.

Her graduation cards leaned beside her plate, stacked high enough that a few at the bottom had already bent at the corners.

Her diploma was probably still in its leather folder in their mother’s SUV, but Sarah had turned the morning into something larger than a graduation brunch.

It was a coronation.

Their father stood with his mimosa lifted.

“To Sarah,” he said, voice bright and full enough for the neighboring table to look over. “The future of the family business.”

Everyone cheered.

Natalie raised her water glass because she had learned years ago that refusing to participate only gave her family a cleaner target.

Sarah’s eyes flicked to her.

It was only half a second.

Long enough to check for jealousy.

Natalie gave her the smile she had practiced over years of family gatherings.

Not warm enough to invite conversation.

Not cold enough to become one.

Their mother dabbed under one eye with a napkin even though no tear had fallen.
