I bought the little house past the last mailbox on our road because I thought quiet would save me.

I wanted a kitchen with old cabinets, a back porch that faced the trees, and a road so empty at night that the loudest thing was the wind moving through the porch rail.

For almost two years, that was what I had.

That morning, the kitchen smelled like biscuit dough and black coffee.

The window above my sink had gone silver with frost.

The little American flag clipped to my back porch rail snapped softly in the dark wind, tapping against the wood like a nervous finger.

I remember all of that because the body holds details when the mind is about to break.

The clock above the stove read 4:07 a.m.

I had flour on my hands.

The coffee had just started to burn at the bottom of the pot.

Then came the sound.

It was not a knock.

It was not somebody calling my name.

It was a heavy thud on the back porch, followed by a wet, ragged gasp that made every year I had spent in trauma nursing stand up inside me.

I opened the door and found my daughter, Maya, on her hands and knees on the frozen boards.

One hand was pressed against her stomach.

The other kept sliding against the porch because she was shaking too badly to hold herself up.
