My parents did not walk into my wedding quietly.

They made an entrance.

The reception hall had that bright, ordinary wedding smell of buttercream, roses, hairspray, and dinner plates being carried from the kitchen under silver lids.

My new husband, Michael, had his hand over mine under the head table, thumb moving slowly across my knuckles like he could tell my nerves had not left my body yet.

I remember the way one cousin stopped chewing.

I remember the tiny sound Michael’s chair made when his body shifted beside mine.

The room was full of white flowers, pink roses, pale table linens, and little gold-rimmed plates, and my family had walked through the doors dressed like they were grieving my happiness.

I was twenty-nine years old, and I had spent most of my life trying to earn a place in a family that had already assigned me one.

Jessica was the daughter people noticed.

She could cry at the right time, smile at the right time, and turn every room into an audience.
