My mother said it from the middle of my dining room with the calm voice she used for appointments, brunch reservations, and reminding people to smile before pictures.

She was not embarrassed.

She had wiped my table down with lemon cleaner before she said it, and the smell still hung in the room like she had already started erasing me.

My father stood next to her with his hands in his pockets, looking at the wall instead of me.

The back window still stuck in humid weather.

The rug under my feet had been bought on clearance after three months of me eating cheap lunches so I could afford something that made the room feel warm.

It was not a mansion.

It was not even the nicest house in the neighborhood.
