Alyssa leaned against the doorway like she had been invited to a show.

“This house isn’t yours anymore, Brooke,” my mother said. “You have until Friday to leave.”

She said it so gently that someone outside our family might have thought she was embarrassed.

She was not.

My mother was never embarrassed by cruelty when she could dress it up as good manners.

My father, Leonard, kept both hands in his pockets.

That was always his tell.

When he felt powerful, he pointed.
