The envelope came back on a Tuesday afternoon, three days after Harper mailed it.

The laundry room in her Los Angeles apartment building smelled like dryer sheets, warm lint, and the faint metallic heat from machines that had been running all day.

She had checked the mailbox because she was expecting vendor paperwork, not a piece of her childhood coming back to her in cream cardstock.

The envelope looked untouched at first.

Same little bend in the corner from the stack she had carried to the post office with James, smiling like a woman who was brave enough to hope.
