The subpoena hit the dining room table hard enough to make my father’s birthday candles shake.

For one second, every person in that room forgot how to move.

Tyler pushed his chair back so hard the legs scraped against the hardwood.

“You’re insane.”

I almost laughed.

Insane was being fourteen years old and handing over $600 a month from an after-school grocery store job because your parents said rent would teach you responsibility.

Insane was standing at a register until your feet hurt, smelling like plastic bags and rotisserie chicken, then coming home and handing your mother money before you had even taken off your name tag.

Insane was watching Tyler stay upstairs rent-free until thirty while Mom said, “He’s discovering himself.”

She had said that phrase so often it became furniture in our house.
