It was black silk, expensive and glossy, the kind of dress my mother bought when she knew there would be photographs and people worth impressing.

My father stepped out of the Cadillac after her in a tuxedo, his face flushed from rushing and irritation, his eyes already moving toward his watch.

They were late.

Not ten-minutes-caught-in-traffic late.

Choice late.

My ceremony had started eight minutes earlier.

At 1:42 p.m., my mother had texted, Traffic is awful. There by 2:15 max.

I had looked at the message in the bridal suite, standing near the window with my bouquet in my hands, and felt nothing surprising.

That was the saddest part.

I was not shocked.

I was not even angry in the way people expect a bride to be angry when her parents choose her sister again.

I was just tired.

When we were kids, Ashley’s dance recitals were family events, complete with flowers, dinner afterward, and my mother telling every neighbor how naturally talented she was.

My school awards went on the refrigerator for three days, then disappeared beneath grocery coupons and appointment cards.

When Ashley cried, the house rearranged itself around her.
