The first siren sounded far behind me, faint enough that I barely noticed it over the hiss of tires on wet pavement.

The second one came sharper.

I was driving south on Interstate 15 after a late shift in downtown Salt Lake City, one hand on the wheel, the other wrapped around a gas-station coffee that had gone cold long before I remembered it existed.

Snowmelt streaked the highway black.

The night smelled like exhaust, stale coffee, and winter air slipping through the old rubber seal around my driver’s-side window.

I remember thinking I just wanted to get home, kick off my shoes, and maybe move three more names around on the wedding seating chart before bed.

That was the kind of problem I thought I had at 11:26 p.m.

Who should sit next to Aunt Rachel.

Whether Garrett’s cousin could be trusted near the open bar.

Whether my mother would behave herself long enough to get through one dinner without making me regret inviting her.

Then a police cruiser cut across the lane in front of me.

Another slid in tight on my passenger side.

A third came up so close behind me that its push bar filled my rearview mirror.

The loudspeaker cracked open.

“Driver, throw your keys out the window and keep your hands visible.”

For one strange second, my brain refused to connect the words to me.

I looked at the car in front of me.

I glanced at the shoulder.

I wondered who they were stopping.

Then the cruiser in front of me angled harder, forcing me toward the side of the highway, and I understood with a cold drop in my stomach that every light, every siren, every weapon and command, was meant for my old Honda.

“Keys out the window. Now.”

My hand shook so badly the key scraped against the ignition.

The little silver mountain charm Garrett bought me on our first weekend trip together tapped against my fingers.
