The morning Katherine Thompson decided to charge me rent for being her son’s wife, the apartment smelled like espresso, lemon cleaner, and the kind of money people mistake for character.

“Since you’re living in our family’s apartment now,” Katherine said, “you’ll pay $1,500 a month in rent.”

Brad did not look up.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not his silence.

The direction of his eyes.
