The first thing I remember about that afternoon is the heat.

Camp Pendleton sat under a hard California sun, the kind that bounced off windshields and made the air above the asphalt look watery.

The place smelled like diesel fuel, ocean salt, hot rubber, cut grass, sunscreen, and whatever was coming off the food tents near the family area.

American flags cracked in the wind along the walkway.

Children pointed at armored vehicles like they were carnival rides.

Parents took pictures of sons and daughters in uniform, trying to look casual while their pride showed all over their faces.

It was Family Day.

That should have made it simple.

You show up.

You smile.

You take a few photos.

You let the person in uniform feel seen.
