The Brass Rail was loud in the way military bars get loud after rain, when everyone comes in damp and hungry and a little too ready to prove they are still alive.

Neon buzzed in the front window.

A country song played too brightly from the jukebox.

The air smelled like fried onions, spilled bourbon, wet asphalt, leather jackets, and old smoke that had sunk so deep into the walls nobody could clean it out anymore.

I set my glass down on the table.

I looked past my brother’s grin.

I looked at Staff Sergeant Cole Maddox’s right hand.

There was a scar crossing his knuckles, pale and jagged under the bar light.

I knew that kind of scar.
