It was the snap of the little gold chain against her throat.

A clean, bright sound.

A sound too small for the damage it did.

The rain had been tapping at the front windows all afternoon, soft and steady, the kind of June rain that made the porch boards dark and left the mailbox shining at the end of the driveway.

Emily had cleaned the house that morning because Daniel was supposed to call from overseas that night, and she had wanted the place to feel like him.

The kitchen smelled faintly of lemon cleaner.

A paper coffee cup sat on the living room table, forgotten by Gloria, lipstick printed on the rim.

The little American flag Daniel had screwed into the porch post before deployment fluttered wetly outside the front door.

Emily had been kneeling because Gloria shoved her backward into the coffee table when Emily refused to sign the papers.

Later, when people asked why she did not scream, why she did not swing back, why she did not run, Emily would remember the exact pressure of the table edge against her thigh.

She would remember the pearls bouncing once, then again, then rolling under Marcus’s muddy boots.

She would remember thinking that her grandmother would have hated the sound.

Gloria stood above her with the broken chain in her fist.

She looked less like a frightened mother and more like a woman who had waited years for permission to be cruel.

“You are going to sign the transfer documents,” Gloria said.

Her voice came out low and sharp.

“Tonight, Emily. Not tomorrow. Not when Daniel gets back. Tonight.”

Emily pressed two fingers against her collarbone.
