Her Husband Texted From Vegas. By Sunrise, His Life Was Unraveling-mdue

At exactly 2:47 a.m., my husband sent me a text from Las Vegas saying he had just married his coworker.

For a second, the phone looked too bright to be real.

The living room was dark except for the muted TV throwing blue light over the coffee table, the couch, and the candle that had burned down to a sad little ring of wax.

The house smelled like old coffee, cold vanilla, and the faint dust that gathers in a room after midnight when no one is supposed to be awake.

I had fallen asleep wrong.

My neck hurt.

One sock was barely hanging on.

There was mail on the table I had meant to open after dinner, because that was who I had become in my marriage to Jasper.

The person who meant to do things later and still got them done before he noticed they existed.

He was supposed to be in Las Vegas for a work conference.

That was the story.

He had left our brick house outside Des Moines that morning with his carry-on overstuffed, his hair still damp from the shower, and that casual confidence men wear when they know someone else has already checked the calendar, the flight time, the hotel reservation, and the charger cord.

He kissed my cheek at the door.

He said, “Don’t stay awake if my flight gets delayed or something.”

I remember that sentence because it was so ordinary it almost felt cruel in hindsight.

There was no trembling goodbye.

No suspicious pause.

No movie-style clue I could later point to and say, There, that was where the truth leaked out.

He just left.

Then, at 2:47 a.m., his name appeared on my phone.

The message read:

Just married Margot. Been with her for eight months. You’re pathetic btw. Your boring energy made this ridiculously easy. Enjoy your sad little life.

I read it once.

Then again.
