Vanessa looked at the phone on the table.

“Good morning to you too,” she said.

“I know what I did.”

“Then fix it.”

“I shut down a card that was used without my permission.”

There was a pause on the line, but it was not shame.

Vanessa knew Trevor’s silences by then.

There was the silence he used when he wanted her to feel guilty.

There was the silence he used when he was recalculating.

And there was the silence he used when he had forgotten, for just one second, that she was not as stupid as his family needed her to be.
