Michael Parker chose the worst hour of the morning to mistake silence for weakness.

Biscuits waited under a clean kitchen towel.

The chandelier threw soft light across polished wood, silverware, and sixteen relatives who had spent the weekend treating Emily like she came with the house.

She had been awake since 3:07 a.m.

Not because anyone had asked kindly.

Because Teresa Parker had said the night before, with that pearl-necklace smile of hers, that a good wife knew how to make guests feel welcome.

Emily made eggs three ways because Michael’s uncle hated soft scrambled eggs.

She brewed coffee twice because Teresa said the first pot tasted weak.

She warmed biscuits because Ashley said cold bread made a house feel cheap.

By 5:12 a.m., Emily’s feet ached inside her house slippers, and the skin under her eyes felt tight from lack of sleep.

She set the final plate down near Michael.

He did not say thank you.

He stood.

For one small second, Emily thought he might announce something about the company, because Michael only used that public voice when he wanted witnesses.

She was right about the voice.

She was wrong about the subject.

“I’m divorcing you, Emily,” he said, loud enough for every Parker to hear, “and this house is done smelling like hired help.”

No one gasped.
