The marble floor was the first thing I trusted that night.

My ankles were swollen, my back ached even when I sat down, and my son moved under my palm as if he already understood that his mother was trying not to fall.

Santiago stood in front of me with his white shirt open at the collar and his gold watch flashing whenever his wrist moved.

To the outside world, he was a millionaire businessman with elegant suits, generous checks, and a face that belonged on the glossy pages of business magazines.

He knew how to smile for cameras.

He knew how to look concerned when someone was watching.

He said it like a promise, not a threat.

My breath caught in my chest, but my hands stayed where they were.

I do not know if Santiago heard me.

I do know that he smiled.
