Given away.

The Honda Civic had been mine for six months.

My dad had handed me the keys in the driveway on a Saturday morning, the little silver key ring resting in his palm like something ordinary and enormous at the same time.

He said he wanted me to stop worrying about rides, repairs, and whether Patrick felt like picking me up after work.

The air was cold enough to make my fingers ache around the door handle.

The driver’s exhaust hung in the driveway while I counted out the last folded bills in my purse and stepped past my uncle’s BMW, my cousin’s Mercedes, and my brother Jason’s SUV.

The porch light was warm.

The little American flag my mother kept by the front steps moved slightly in the wind.

Through the dining room window, I could see the chandelier and the bright white plates already set in perfect lines.
