Sometimes it meant David was in his study with the door closed, moving money, making calls, or deciding which version of Sarah he would present to people that week.

Sometimes it meant Emma was hiding on the stairs, four years old and already too careful for a child.

Sarah hated that most of all.

The reduction was quiet at first.

He suggested Sarah sell her old car because his family had “better vehicles.”
