The first thing Sofía noticed was not her father.

It was the glow of her phone under the sleeve of her graduation gown.

The auditorium at Tec de Monterrey was loud in that soft, ceremonial way, full of clapping that rose and fell like someone turning a faucet on and off.

Families whispered over programs.

Somewhere near the stage, a microphone gave a tiny squeal before the next name was announced.

Sofía Cárdenas Robles kept her hands folded in her lap because that was what graduates did when they were waiting to walk.

She was 27 years old, old enough to have sat through investor meetings where men twice her age tried to explain her own product back to her, but for one brief second she still felt like a girl waiting to be graded.

Her phone vibrated again.

She should have ignored it.

Sofía did not need to look up to know exactly how he sat.

Straight back.

Jaw set like he had never once apologized with his whole face.

She opened the message.

“Don’t expect help from me. You’re on your own.”

The sentence did not surprise her.
