Her Father Raised A Belt At His Birthday Party. Then Phones Came Out-Quieen

My father ripped off his belt at his own sixtieth birthday party, and the whole house learned what I had spent years trying to forget.

Inside, my daughter Ava was three years old and asking for water.

That was all.

She was not being disrespectful.

I was already on the floor.

I had both hands under Ava’s shoulders, then one hand behind her head, then a dish towel pressed there because the towel was the first thing I could reach.

Her eyes fluttered.

That is the image that will follow me longer than any courtroom I have ever stood in.

My child looking up at me like she was trying to stay in the world.

I had worked as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney.

I had reviewed case files with photographs paper-clipped behind witness statements.
