“Why don’t you disappear once and for all?” Camille screamed from the far end of the dining room.

The rain was ticking against the windows hard enough to sound like fingernails on glass.

The chandelier above the table made everything glow gold, which almost felt cruel.

It warmed the untouched roast, the folded linen napkins, the crystal glasses, the bracelet shaking on Camille’s wrist, and the tears she had turned on for an audience.

I stood near the end of the table with my coat still draped over the back of my chair.

No one had asked me to sit back down.

No one had asked if I was okay.

They had already decided what role I was supposed to play.

Camille was the injured bride.

My parents were the grieving parents of that injured bride.

I was the jealous sister who had apparently ruined everything.

That was how fast my family could build a courtroom when the defendant was me.

“She sent the email,” Camille sobbed.

Her voice cracked beautifully.

The word everything landed in the room and stayed there.

My mother’s hand was already around my arm.

Her nails dug into my skin hard enough to leave half-moons.

“You jealous little rat,” she whispered.

My father stared at me from the head of the table with the kind of cold disappointment he usually saved for bills, broken appliances, and any moment when I did not make the family easier to manage.

“Apologize to your sister,” he said.

“I didn’t send it,” I said.
