My mother’s hand flew to her mouth the second I walked into the military courtroom in full dress whites.

My father gripped the bench in front of him so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Twelve years earlier, they believed one sentence.

“Tom said you quit.”

My mother said it in our front hallway like she was explaining something already settled.

I remember the porch light behind her.

I remember the smell of laundry soap drifting out from the house.

I remember my father standing several feet back, arms crossed, his face hard in the way it got whenever he thought disappointment made him look strong.

I had driven eight hours home on leave.

I was still in uniform.

My shoulders ached from the trip, and my hands had been shaking on the steering wheel for the last ten miles because I had rehearsed every sentence and still knew none of them would be enough if they had already made up their minds.

“I didn’t quit,” I told them.

My mother’s eyes flicked over my uniform as if fabric itself could lie.

“Tom said they dismissed you.”

“That’s not true.”

My father looked past me toward the driveway.

He would not even meet my eyes.

“You couldn’t finish it,” he said.

“I did finish it. I’m still serving.”

The silence that followed was worse than shouting.

It was the kind of silence that tells you your words are being treated like noise.
