The first thing I noticed at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado was the sound of all those little American flags snapping in the wind.

They were everywhere that morning, gripped in children’s hands, tucked into tote bags, taped to stroller handles, flashing red and blue under a bright California sky.

The ocean air smelled like salt, sunscreen, and hot pavement, and the sun was already hot enough to make the backs of the white folding chairs warm through my dress.

I had driven through the night from Arizona with one black garment bag in the back seat and Jason’s ceremony program folded inside my purse.

By 11:18 a.m., my visitor badge had been scanned, my name had cleared the front-row list, and I had told myself the same thing three times.

It sounded simple when I practiced it in the car.

It stopped being simple the second my mother saw me.

She was standing near the front row in a pale blue dress and pearls, her hair sprayed into place, smiling at other families the way she always smiled when strangers might be watching.

The smile thinned.

“Olivia,” she said, like my name was a stain she had found on the tablecloth.

“Mom.”

She looked past me toward the aisle, then back at me. “You’re sitting here?”

“My credential says front row.”

“This section is for family.”

“I know.”

My father came up behind her holding two paper coffee cups and wearing the expression he used when he thought he was above a scene he had quietly helped create.

He looked me up and down once.

“Black?” he asked.

“It was clean.”

He chuckled under his breath, but not because it was funny.
