My father did not look angry when he saw the promotion invitation.

That would have been easier.

My mother stood in the kitchen stirring sauce that did not need stirring.

I stood by the coffee table holding the invitation with both hands, as if better posture could make my family take it seriously.

Dad glanced at it, then at the television.

“We’re not wasting our time on your pathetic little promotion ceremony,” he said.

My mother froze for half a second.

Then she did what she had done most of my life.

She softened his words for him without making him take them back.

“Frank, honey, don’t start.”

I looked at her.

“I didn’t say anything.”

Dad pointed the remote toward me.

“Exactly. You get that military face and suddenly everybody’s supposed to clap.”
