At first, Sierra Merritt did not cry.

Sierra sometimes called her stepmother, but Victoria hated the word.

She preferred “your father’s wife,” as if even language needed to keep Sierra outside the family circle.

For twelve years, Sierra had learned the rules of that house by watching what disappeared first.

Her name on invitations.

Her face from Christmas cards.

Her bedroom from the second floor.

By sixteen, being erased had become ordinary.
