Her Family Demanded Rent Money At Thanksgiving. Then Uncle James Hit Play-nga9999

Thanksgiving was supposed to smell like roasted turkey, cinnamon, butter, and the kind of warmth families pretend they never have to work for.

I walked up my parents’ front steps carrying two homemade pumpkin pies, my fingers cold from the November air and my stomach already tight from the text my mother had sent that morning.

Don’t be late. We need to talk before dinner.

In my family, “we need to talk” never meant a conversation.

It meant a bill.

I balanced the pies against my coat and pushed open the heavy oak door with my hip, expecting the noise of football, cousins laughing, somebody asking where Nathan was.

Instead, my mother was standing in the entryway like she had been waiting for me to step onto a mark.

My father stood behind her with his arms folded.

From the dining room, the soft clink of silverware faded into a silence that felt staged.

“Crystal,” my mother said, before I could even take off my shoes, “before you sit down, we need to settle Emma’s rent.”

The word settle landed like I owed a debt.

I set the pies down on the hallway table as carefully as I could.

The crusts were still warm under the foil.

My hands were not.

“Mom, I already told you last week,” I said. “I’ve helped Emma several times this year. Nathan and I are saving for the wedding. I can’t keep doing this every month.”

My mother’s mouth tightened.

Behind her, Dad shifted his weight, not stepping forward, not defending me, just filling the doorway with his quiet judgment.

From the dining room, chairs moved.

I could see my aunt Linda turn in her chair.

One of my cousins leaned sideways to get a better view.

Family friends I only saw on holidays looked toward the entryway like my paycheck had just become the first course.

My mother lifted her chin.

“Doing this every month?” she said, loud enough to carry. “Your sister is trying to keep a roof over her head, and you’re acting like you’re being asked for something outrageous.”

“It is outrageous when there’s no end to it.”
