Emma read the page three times before the words finally landed.

Then she sat down like her knees had quit.

No one spoke for a second, and in that second I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen, the low tick of the mantel clock, and James drawing in a breath through his teeth like he had swallowed something sharp.

That was the first real silence of the night.

Emma’s phone buzzed again in her hand, but she did not even look at it.

The article had started to spread.

I could tell by the way her eyes kept darting down and then away, as if the screen were burning her.
