My parents decided my lake house belonged to the whole family.

So I let them believe that right up until they showed up at the gate.

The first clue came at 7:12 on a Thursday morning, when my kitchen still smelled like burnt coffee and rain was tapping softly against the window over the sink.

I was barefoot on the tile in my Charlotte house, half-awake and already thinking about the quarterly reports waiting on my desk.

Then my father texted me one sentence.

Your vacation home is perfect for the family reunion — we’re coming next month.

There was no question mark.

No “would that work for you?”

No “Nora, can we talk about this?”

Just an announcement, dropped into my phone like my lake house was a public park with my last name on it.

I stared at the message until the coffee in my mug stopped steaming.

Before I could answer, my mother called.

That was how she worked.

Dad sent the blunt message.

Mom came behind it with sugar on the blade.

“Nora, honey,” she said, in that bright voice she used when she had already decided what I was going to do. “Your father told you about the reunion, right?”

I leaned against the counter and looked out at the rain sliding down the glass.

“He told me something,” I said.

“Well, don’t make it sound like that,” she said with a laugh that had no humor in it. “It’ll be good for everyone. Melissa’s boys are so excited.”

There it was.

Melissa.

My younger sister had a way of entering every room before she physically arrived.

“And since the boys are out of school,” Mom continued, “they can probably stay most of the summer. It makes sense. You barely use the place anyway.”

That sentence did not hit loud.
