The contraction hit Chloe so hard that Hartford Memorial seemed to tilt under her.

One second, she was gripping the cold plastic rails of the labor bed, her palms slick with sweat and her hospital wristband cutting softly into her skin.

The next, the ceiling lights blurred into a bright white smear, and every muscle in her body tightened around a pain too large to name.
