The wine glass hit Sally Donovan before she saw her father throw it.

One second, she was sitting at her parents’ Easter table, watching the glaze on the ham turn sticky under the dining room light.

The next, glass cracked against the side of her forehead with a wet, sharp sound that seemed to stop the whole house.

Warmth slid down her temple.

For half a second, Sally thought it was wine.

Her mother, Virginia, stood at the end of the table with both hands pressed into the lace runner.

Her father, Harold, stood beside her with his right arm still suspended in the air, as if even he had not fully accepted what his hand had done.

The chandelier hummed above them.

A candle flame trembled beside the ham.

Somewhere upstairs, Tyler was crying behind a closed door.

Sally’s nine-year-old niece, Madison, stood in the dining room archway with a paper plate of carrot cake in both hands.

The plate shook so hard that the frosting slid toward one edge.

Madison had seen everything.

“You’re being selfish,” Virginia said.

That was the first thing out of her mouth.

Not “Are you hurt?”

Not “Harold, what did you do?”

Not even Sally’s name.

Just that one sentence, spoken like the real injury in the room was Sally’s refusal.

“You have empty bedrooms,” Virginia added.

Sally stared at her mother through the sting in her eye.

The empty bedrooms were not empty to Sally.
