Then my phone lit up with Emily’s name.

At first, I almost smiled.

Emily had always called at odd times.

When she was six, she called me from her grandmother’s kitchen because she had lost a tooth and wanted me to know before anyone else.

When she was seventeen, she called from a school parking lot because the car would not start and she was too proud to cry until she heard my voice.

When I deployed, she called every night she could, describing the sunset back home as if she could mail the color across the world.

That was my daughter.

She noticed light.

She noticed weather.

So when I answered and heard only ragged breathing, my hand tightened on the wheel.

The call ended.
