My six-year-old daughter came home from a cousin spa day with a pink bucket hat pulled so low over her ears that I almost smiled.

It looked like something Lily would do after an afternoon of face masks and pretend tea.

She loved a costume.

She loved walking into a room like she had a secret surprise tucked behind her teeth.

Then she lifted the hat.

The kitchen smelled like burned butter and hot bread because the grilled cheese in the pan had already started going black.

The smoke alarm had not gone off yet, but the air had that sharp, greasy bite that tells you something is too late.

Lily stood in the doorway in her purple dress, holding the hat in both hands.

Her hair was gone.

Not shortened.

Not shaped.

Gone in pieces.

The long brown braid she had been growing since preschool had been cut off and hacked around the edges until her head looked uneven and bare in places.

The back was so short I could see the pale curve of her scalp.

For a moment, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

That is the strange mercy of shock.

It gives you half a second where the truth is standing right in front of you, and your mind still tries to protect you from it.

Then Lily whispered, “My aunt said my hair was too pretty, Mommy.”

The spatula fell out of my hand.

“She said it wasn’t fair to Chloe,” Lily said.

The smoke alarm started screaming.
