My six-year-old daughter came home from a “cousin spa day” wearing a pink bucket hat pulled so low it covered the tops of her ears.

The kitchen smelled like butter and toasted bread, and the grilled cheese in the pan had just started to brown at the edges.

Sunday light was coming through the window over the sink.

The house was quiet in that soft afternoon way, with cartoons paused on the TV and sidewalk chalk dust still on the front step.

Then Lily lifted the hat.

I still remember the sound the spatula made when it hit the floor.

Not because it was loud.
