I had finished one of those long days at Fort Liberty that makes your bones feel older than they are, and I was still in my Army dress uniform when my phone lit up on the desk.

Her voice barely made it through.

The room around me went still.

The hallway outside my office smelled faintly of floor wax and burned coffee, and somewhere down the corridor, a door clicked shut with that clean military sound I had heard thousands of times.

But all I could hear was my daughter breathing.

“Emily,” I said, already standing. “Where are you?”

There was a pause.

A machine beeped near her.

A woman’s voice in the background said something about finishing an intake form.

Then Emily whispered, “Mercy General.”

I asked who was with her.

She did not answer.

I asked if she was safe.
