The first thing I remember from that Christmas Eve is not Vanessa’s voice.

For one foolish second, my mind refused to arrange the words in the order she meant them.

Then she added that I was “busy here.”

Then she said January would be perfect.

Then she said she and Julian would move into the beach house full-time.
