Emily reached her mother’s porch at 1:07 a.m. barefoot, shaking, and covered in the kind of fear a person cannot fake.

The porch light above Sarah’s front door buzzed softly, throwing a yellow circle over the welcome mat, the mailbox at the curb, and the wet shine of the driveway.

Inside, Sarah had been asleep for maybe two hours.

She had gone to bed after closing the bakery, after wiping down the display case, after stacking tomorrow’s paper coffee cups beside the espresso machine, after putting two trays of cinnamon rolls in the cooler to rise overnight.

When the knocking started, she thought at first it was the wind pushing a branch against the siding.

Then came the voice.

“Mom.”

Sarah opened the door with her robe twisted around one shoulder.

The smell of rain and pavement came in first.

Then she saw Emily.

Her daughter was on her knees.

Her lip was swollen, one side of her face purple, dried blood stiff on the sleeve of her blouse.

Her bare feet were dirty, scraped, and trembling against the porch boards.

“If you make me go back with him,” Emily whispered, “I won’t be alive by morning.”

Sarah did not scream.

She did not ask why.

She did not waste the first minute on shock.

She pulled Emily inside, locked the deadbolt, slid the chain, and pressed her body between her daughter and the dark street beyond the front window.

Only after the door was locked did Sarah let herself look at the damage.

“Who did this?” she asked.

Emily shook her head, breathing too fast.

“They said nobody would believe me.”

“Who?”

Emily’s eyes moved to the window.
