My father looked at my promotion invitation like I had handed him a coupon for windshield wipers.

He was sunk so deep into his recliner that the old leather squeaked under him every time he reached for the pretzel bowl.

ESPN highlights flashed blue and white against his glasses while my mother stirred pasta sauce in the kitchen that had already been simmering for twenty minutes too long.

The house smelled like tomato, beer, pretzels, and the lemon cleaner my mother used whenever she was nervous.

I stood in the middle of the living room in my parents’ split-level house and waited for one of them to recognize the word printed on the invitation.

Major.

Not captain.

Major.

My father read the first line, made a sound in his throat, and dropped the paper on the coffee table.

“We’re not wasting our time on your pathetic little promotion ceremony,” he said.

My mother’s wooden spoon stopped moving.

Only for half a second.

Then she started stirring again.

“Aaron, honey,” she said, without looking at me, “don’t start.”

My father pointed the remote at me.

“Exactly. You get that military face and suddenly everybody’s supposed to clap.”

My younger brother Danny laughed from the kitchen island.

Danny had always laughed at the safest target in the room.

He wore a Cleveland Browns hoodie, a watch he couldn’t afford, and that smug soft smile people get when they have never been allowed to land hard.

He was thirty-four, divorced twice, and forever six months away from a breakthrough.

My father called that ambition.
