MBA smile.

A stack of graduation cards leaned beside her plate, and the leather folder holding her diploma was probably still in Mom’s SUV outside, but Sarah had already turned the degree into a family coronation.

Dad lifted his mimosa and looked around the table as though he were standing at a podium.

“To Sarah,” he said, loud enough for the neighboring table to hear. “The future of the family business.”

Everyone cheered.

I raised my water glass.

I had learned long ago that my family did not need me to be happy at these events.

They only needed me not to embarrass them by looking honest.

Sarah glanced at me for half a second, checking my face the way she used to check mirrors before walking into a party.

She wanted jealousy.
