The first sound Sarah Carter remembered was not her brother’s laugh.

It was the boarding chime.

A clean, harmless little tone floated over the noise at Denver International Airport while people shifted bags, checked screens, and tried to pretend the weather outside would not ruin their plans.

The tote had been with her through cheap apartments, late nights, bad coffee, and years of keeping copies of things her family believed she had never understood.

That morning, Jake looked at it the way he looked at everything Sarah owned, as if it proved she had lost before the fight even started.

He had their mother’s designer carry-on in one hand and his boarding pass in the other.

Their father, Richard Carter, stood slightly behind them, where he could look respectable without taking responsibility for anything being said.

For seven years, that had been his preferred position.

His shoulders lifted a little.
