Lucas Bennett lifted the blanket because he thought he was about to uncover a lie.

The bedroom was too quiet for a Chicago night.

Traffic moved somewhere far below the glass walls of the apartment, hissing against wet pavement, but inside their room all Lucas could hear was Emma’s breathing and the thin scrape of cotton as she pulled the white blanket tighter against her body.

The lamp on the nightstand threw soft yellow light across her face.

It made her look younger than she was.

For six days, Emma had refused to get out of bed.

At first, Lucas told himself it was the pregnancy.

She was six months along, and both of them had learned the hard way that pregnancy did not always end in a nursery full of soft blankets and whispered promises.

The other ended after Lucas had already started checking the baby aisle at the grocery store for things he pretended not to understand.

Emma had smiled through both losses in the way women sometimes smile when they are trying to keep everyone else from falling apart.

Lucas had mistaken that strength for endlessness.

Now she lay in bed, refusing breakfast, refusing the balcony, refusing the private OB-GYN appointment he had booked without even looking at the cost.

He had stood in the doorway the night before with his suit jacket still on, smelling like steakhouse smoke, expensive cologne, and the cold air from the parking garage.

“Emma,” he had asked, “are you afraid of me?”

She had looked at him as if the question itself hurt.

Then she whispered, “Please don’t make me stand up.”

That sentence stayed with him.

It followed him into the shower.

It sat beside him in the car while his driver moved through downtown traffic.

It stood behind him during a morning meeting where men in dark jackets argued over construction delays and hotel permits.
