The pen barely made a sound when Dana signed her name.

It was just a soft scratch across paper.

Dana could still hear Ben in the den, tapping his game controller too fast, pretending the whole house had not gone tense.

Upstairs, Ellie had her headphones on.

That usually meant she was trying not to listen.
