Emily was standing by the road in a faded T-shirt, worn sandals, and jeans powdered gray from dust.

The afternoon was brutal, the kind of heat that made the asphalt shimmer and turned every breath into work.

At her feet sat a plastic grocery bag with crushed cans and empty bottles pressing against the sides.

Michael should have stopped her.

Instead, he sat there with both hands on the wheel and let the woman beside him keep talking.

Ashley had a talent for cruelty that looked like confidence if you did not listen closely.
