The emergency room smelled like bleach, cold coffee, and the metallic taste I could not get out of my mouth.

The lights above me were too white.

The paper sheet under my shoulders scratched my skin every time I tried to breathe.

Grant stood beside my hospital bed in a wrinkled white dress shirt, still trying to look like a husband people should trust.

“She slipped in the bathroom,” he said quickly.

He said it before the nurse even finished asking the question.

“I found her beside the sink. My wife is clumsy. I’ve told her a hundred times she needs to be careful.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

Anyone watching might have thought he was scared for me.

I knew better.

It was not comfort.

It was a command.

I stared at the ceiling tile above me and tried to count the tiny pinholes in it because pain had become easier to survive when I gave my mind something stupid to do.

Then my ribs pulled sharp, and the counting stopped.
