By 5:00 a.m., the house already smelled like roasting turkey, melted butter, cinnamon, and the sharp pine cleaner Sylvia sprayed across every counter when she wanted people to think her life was spotless.

Anna had been awake since before dawn.

Her feet were swollen inside cheap black flats she had bought because the old ones no longer fit, and the waistband of her maternity dress rubbed against her skin under the apron every time she bent toward the oven.

David had noticed nothing.

He had come downstairs at 8:12 a.m. in a pressed shirt, kissed his mother on the cheek, glanced at the counters full of food, and asked Anna whether she remembered to chill the white wine.

He did not ask if she had eaten.

He did not ask why she was gripping the edge of the sink with one hand and breathing through her nose like the room was tilting.

Sylvia arrived before noon with two garment bags, a box of candles, and a look that swept over the kitchen like an inspection.

“The rolls are too close to the window,” she said.

“The gravy boat needs polishing.”

Anna polished it.

“The dining room smells like onions.”

Anna opened the hallway window even though the December air pushed cold straight through the house and made her back ache harder.

David stood in the doorway with his phone in his hand, checking messages from colleagues who were already on their way.

“Just do what she asks,” he said softly.
