His fingers hit my arm before his voice reached me.

That is what I remember first.

Not his face.

The grip.

Derek Collins had always been able to make cruelty feel casual, like it was just another thing he happened to be carrying in one hand.

That night, he carried it into the officers’ club hallway at Fort Myer, surrounded by polished marble, mahogany paneling, winter flowers, and the low music of a military gala that was still trying to pretend nothing ugly had happened.

Champagne slipped over the rim of my glass and ran cold between my fingers.

A second later, the glass dropped and shattered at my feet.

The sound cut through the hallway, clean and bright.

The band kept playing inside the ballroom.

That almost made it worse.

There is something awful about music continuing while somebody puts his hands on you, because for half a second the world looks elegant enough to deny what is right in front of it.

“Excuse me?” I said.

My voice sounded steadier than I felt.

Derek leaned close enough for me to smell the bourbon on him.

“Don’t play dumb, Rachel,” he said. “I know exactly why you’re hanging around the VIP wing.”

He said my name like he had the right.

For a second, I was twenty-six again.

I was back in the cheap motel room where I had spent the night before my wedding sitting on a stained carpet with my dress hanging from a chair.

I was reading the message he sent me at 11:43 p.m., the one that said he was leaving with the base commander’s daughter because she understood the kind of future he deserved.

He did not call.

He did not knock.

He did not even have the courage to watch my face change.
