He Left Me Off The Wedding List In The House I Bought For Him-Quieen

My brother told me I was not invited to his wedding in the house I bought for him.

He said it from the front porch, with flowers going in behind him and guests laughing somewhere out in the backyard.

The afternoon was warm enough that the icing on the cake had started to smell sweet through the cardboard box, and the driveway shimmered under the kind of late light that makes every lie look expensive.

White ribbons had been tied along the porch rail.

Gold-trimmed arrangements stood on either side of the front door.

A caterer rolled a rack of covered trays past me and asked, “Bride’s side or groom’s side?”

I almost said groom.

Then I saw my brother’s face.

Michael was standing under the porch light with a glass in his hand and a suit that looked sharper than anything he had ever bought with his own money.

Behind him, the house looked ready for a magazine.

I had bought the house, paid the closing costs, kept the insurance current, and still showed up with a gift bag because some foolish part of me wanted to be included.

“Michael,” I said. “Where am I sitting?”

He looked past me before he answered.

Not because he was checking the list.

Because he was checking who could hear.

“Emily, you’re not on the list.”

For a second, the whole reception seemed to move away from me.

The porch was still under my feet.

The music was still playing in the backyard.
