The international terminal had the kind of cold air that made every sound sharper.

Coffee steamed from paper cups near the gate.

Somewhere above Emily Harris, the air vents hummed like they had been running all night.

She stood at the airline check-in desk with her passport in one hand and the edge of her printed confirmation in the other, waiting for the agent to smile and tell her the computer had glitched.

The agent did not smile.

“Miss, there must be some mistake,” Emily said. “My husband and I had business-class tickets. We paid extra for the early booking.”

Her voice came out polite because that was what ten years of marriage had trained into her.

“The change was made yesterday at 9:47 p.m. through the airline account,” the agent added. “The refund for one ticket went back to the card used for purchase.”

Then she glanced down.

“Your husband’s card.”

For one second, the terminal seemed to continue without her.

A toddler cried near the baggage scale.

A man in a baseball cap argued about an overweight suitcase.

Someone laughed too loudly behind them.

Emily turned and looked at Michael.
